Mykonos: A flashback at iconic moments of the cosmopolitan island
Mykonos is, without a doubt, one of the most popular Greek destinations!
Known for its wild nightlife and top-quality luxurious services, the windy island has become a top meeting point for tourists and celebrities all over the world!
Moreover, only a few will remember the rich history of the island.

Let’s get into a flashback to the golden years of Mykonos Island…

You may have heard about the tale where handsome princes traveled to isolated parts of the world so they could live like simple humans.
It was much more than a tale. It was an island, whitewashed under the Greek sun. It was Mykonos.
A surprise for the young girls and boys who discovered it in the late 1940s and a beloved place for those who spread it abroad in the 50s.

An ideal destination for great personalities

Melina Merkouri, Anna Veltsou, and Eleni Vlahou were among the first who fall in love with its carelessness and authentic beauty, and they kept returning bringing more friends to the island. Let us remind you that back then, Mykonos had no electricity and proper port and the visitors used to arrive with boats on the shore.
It took only a while for Dimitris Horn and Zahos Hadjifotiou to join them and indulge in the unprecedented freedom the island offered to its guests.
In the summer of 1979, Billy Bo, who used to have his boutique at the very spot where Kessaris is today, presented his new collection at Mykonos with the young actress, Mimi Denissi as his model. During the same period, Vassilis Zoulias visited and loved Matogiannia so he organized a photoshoot there for one of his most iconic fashion collections.

Not to mention that Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Brigitte Bardot, Jean Moreau, Marlon Brando, Barbra Streisand, Richard Burton, princess Soraya, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly are among the great well-known personalities who visited the windy island regularly.

Iconic legendary bars
In the golden years of the 60s and the 70s, the island remained pure and seductive with its pristine beaches. It was the era of Pierro’s, Remezzo, and Caprice, the mythical bars that became a case study and were loved by a lot of guests!
In 1967, Makis Zouganelis and his wife, Paola, a remarkable lady with class and posture opened the legendary Remezzo with its outstanding white terrace - the meeting point for all tourists and locals in Mykonos.

Paul Newman, Princess Soraya, Stavros Niarchos, Yul Brynner, and Vassilis Goulandris used to clink the bar’s Egyptian glasses and drink frozen margaritas and champagne, while Audrey Hepburn and Rudolf Nureyev were dancing on the terrace.
In 1972, the painter, Pierro Aversa and Andreas Koutsoukos wrote their own history with Pierro’s, the 50 sq.m bar that became the tiny Studio 54 of Mykonos. It started as a before-dinner bar with Broadway music to evolve into a party legend with disco hits that guests heard for the first time here. Gianfranco Ferrè, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Valentino, as well as renowned ship owners and successful businessmen, such as Goulandris, Karelas, and Fix were regulars there. Every week, they organized a theme party with a different dress code. In 1984, Caprice was born with an excellent sunset view, and two years later Sea Satin under the windmills. In 1987, Minas, the famous artist, was painting the logo of Astra on the top of a wooden ladder. That was the new hot spot on the island.
Next to Pierro’s, Manto bar was added to enhance the party zone, while Vengera was another hang-out for dancing.
Remezzo was known for its Venetian-style parties attended by Anna Veltsou, Thomas Fritz, and then Billy Bo, Makis Tselios, Verouska and Aliki Vougiouklaki.
When Pierro Aversa left the bar a year later, Koutsoukos run Pierro’s with Margo Laing, who left a PR career next to Robert Kennedy to live her Mykonos dream. Margo and Paola were the souls of Pierro’s and Remezzo.

One way or another, it seems that Mykonos Island holds a long legendary story behind it.
Great loves, unique moments, acquaintances, and collaborations were born there.

Today Mykonos continues to be a top destination for great personalities, celebrities, and visitors who love adventure, parties, high-quality accommodation, and picturesque views.
